Finally, after lots of contemplating, learning, designing and getting all creative, Winnie & Wellie has at long last got off the ground and ideas have become a reality.

The thing with starting something new is that thinking about it the easy part, getting on and really starting a new project is the where it gets tricky.

Someone once said that there are two reasons why great projects never get off the ground:

1. They don’t get finished

2. They don’t get started!

There is no doubt about it, starting something new can be exciting but it can also be as scary as that hot place where bad people go. You have moments when you think, I can’t do this, it will never work, why am I bothering but then you think, hang on, there is no reason why this can’t work, it is good fun and I can make a difference. All it needs is a bit of courage to keep going so you don’t talk yourself out of it on a bad day. 😊

Dream on

If you are wondering where this did all start, it started as just a feeling. A feeling that it was time to try something different. It was a niggling thought that it was time to do something more creative but at the same to do something that could make a “difference”.

After a bit soul and internet searching, I came across the concept promoted by the great team at Teemill. Their ethos of circular fashion, were products come back in the clothing food chain to be remade into something new, only using organic cotton, and a production process that is run by renewable energy, seemed like the way to go. It allowed for the creative side to come out by designing new products but it was also a way to spread the word about sustainable clothing, and things that matter to me (and hopefully you), not to mention all the benefits there are for the environment. All summed up by our Bee Kind range!

Bee Kind…… to the environment, to others and not forgetting yourself 💛👍 🙂

From Packaging to Butterflies

When starting this new venture, one of the most frustrating aspects was the realisation that I didn’t have a clue about a lot of things. I had the ideas and designs but everything else about starting a new business and social media was completely new. I had forgotten what it was like to be a newbie and I had forgotten what it was like to have to learn from scratch.

What is good to remember at times like this, is it is the same for everyone. You don’t start out being an expert, you become an expert by trying and giving things a go. Somethings will work and somethings won’t but that is how you learn.

Here’s a simple example of how, if you keep trying, you will, hopefully, get there in the end. My t-shirt samples arrived in some very cleverly designed paper packaging curtesy of the Teemill Team. Although it can be recycled, it looked too good just to go in the bin. Searching for ideas on Pinterest I came across some origami videos, and more specifically videos about origami butterflies. This was great as the butterfly features quite a lot in the Winnie & Wellie collections, but more on that another time. I took a picture of the clever print.

Well how difficult can this be I thought. Half an hour later and still no origami butterfly. I only had a square of paper with lots of creases in it. Determined not to let this beat me, I didn’t give up. I watched the video over and over again, paused, went back and kept going. In the end I managed to make one, and then another one and until I had five all together, of different sizes. The thing that made me smile was that from the first attempt to the last there was a definite improvement, and even though I say it myself, the last butterfly actually looked like the one in the video. Here's one that "landed" on my lovely red geranium.

The sense of achievement was huge, I had just learnt a new skill. Okay, so it is just a paper butterfly, but it made a very big point. I found a quote by Joe Sabah that seemed to say it all perfectly.

“You don’t have to be good to start, you just have to start to be good!”

Happy Beginnings.

Winnie & Wellie

X

Plastic pollution is in the media a lot these days and rightly so, it is a massive problem.
