A lot of fast fashion, has shall we say, jumped on the organic cotton bandwagon and has started to produce products that they call organic. But just how organic are they?

Here is a reminder of the benefits of organic cotton:

Better for the environment and you

Organic Cotton production uses no pesticides or insecticides

Organic cotton uses natural methods to control pests and weeds.

Traditional cotton accounts for 25% of the world’s insecticide use and more than 10% of its pesticide use. There are associated health risks to workers and the chemicals can seep into the ground and water courses. Traditional cotton has the unfortunate title of being the most pesticide dependent crop in the world

Uses a lot less water

Organic farms tend to be based in naturally rainy areas. This means that farmers do not have to water the cotton crops as much as they just use nature to do the job. This also increases biodiversity, all helping to produce a better crop

Traditional cotton production uses a lot of water. It takes just 7,000 L to make 1Kg of organic cotton, but 29,000 L for non-organic cotton.

Healthier soil

Organic farming methods ensure that the soil is rotated and well looked after which means it is therefore healthier. In turn this produces better crops with better water retention.

Meanwhile the traditional intensive methods of non-organic cotton farming degrade the soil over time.

On balance, the view it that organic cotton production is better for the environment. There is less pollution, it mitigates against climate change by being more energy efficient and creates less CO2. Not only that, it is better and fairer for the people that farm it too.

However, the story doesn't end there.

It is what happens after the cotton is grown that is also important when deciding on how organic is organic.

Once the cotton is harvested it then needs to be processed. If not done ethically and sustainably, it can involve bleaching and dying, again using large amounts of water, which are all harmful to the environment and not particularly good for you either, when you wear the end result.

For organic cotton to be truly called organic the whole process from seed to shop needs to be considered. That's why at Winnie & Wellie we can safely call our products organic as they have been made and produced by our partner company that is certified organic, i.e., they have the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) seal of approval.

So, if you want to be 100% sure you are buying 100% organic cotton, then look out for the GOTS logo or initials. That way you will know you are really are buying the real deal and making a difference too.

To learn more visit The Journey - https://winnieandwellie.com/the-journey/ and check out our lovely range of women's organic clothing at https://winnieandwellie.com/womens-organic-clothing/

One last thought.
